The Healthy Food You Need on Your Next Picnic

Planning a picnic with your best pals this summer?

Make sure your basket is full of healthy snacks to help you keep your diet on track this summer. 

It's not hard to pack a healthy picnic basket. And if you're meeting friends, give everyone a different job and make it potluck-style! 

A few basics to pack: 

  • A good cutting knife (even a paring knife will do!)
  • A small cutting board
  • Some reusable containers 
  • Reusable cutlery and plates 
  • A blanket (bonus points if it has a waterproof side)
  • A picnic basket
  • A cooler 
  • Optional: A portable BBQ  


1. Make your own wraps 

Bring all the ingredients for your guests to make their own wraps (taking some of the hassle off of you!) 

Some things to include: 

  • Shredded cheese or feta cheese
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Sliced peppers
  • Ground meat or tuna
  • Whole grain or Ezekial wraps 


2. Skewers 

Again, you can let your friends create their own, or prep them in advance. Here are some awesome combinations: 

  • Melon, prosciutto, and mozzarella (via Greatist
  • Caprese skewers (bocconcini, cherry tomatoes, and balsamic vinaigrette) 
  • Watermelon and Feta

3. Grain-y salads 

The best part about salads without lettuce? The taste even better the next day! 

Opt for a grain that will give you the most nutritional benefits, like quinoa or a fibre-rich, or legumes for a protein punch. And choose vegetables that can stand up to dressing like carrots, celery, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes. 


4. Cut Up Vegetables

This might seem like a no-brainer, but these can be a lifesaver when you're faced with a bag of chips and it's been 2 hours since you last ate. 

Our favourites are cucumber, carrots, tomatoes, or sliced radish. Add some hummus or greek yogurt dip to add some protein!


5. Pre-made burgers or marinated chicken

Are you planning a BBQ Picnic? Skip out on the pre-made burgers in a box with some easy homemade recipes! Here is an easy recipe: 

  • 1 leek and 2 cloves of garlic, sautéed
  • 1 egg
  • 2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 big pinch of salt

Mix it all together and form patties with your hands. Depending on the size, you should get 6-8 burgers out of this!


6. Snacks!

Skip the bag of chips and bring some homemade popcorn! You can top it however you like–sweet, salty, or get wild and do both. 

Here is a salty combination: 

  • Coconut oil 
  • Garlic powder
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Himalayan sea salt

Satisfy your sweet tooth with: 

  • Cinnamon
  • Cocoa powder
  • Coconut flakes
  • Maple syrup
