Even if you don't keep up with all of the latest food trends like some of us here at Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club, we're pretty sure that you've heard the term "superfood" thrown around the last few years. Anything from kale to kelp has made the cut over the last few years, so it can be hard to know where to start.
We wanted to round up the top 5 superfoods that we couldn't live without this year, and hope you might check them out too!
Collagen has been at the top of any foodie's Instagram feed this year - from collagen infused protein balls, to bulletproof coffees, this superfood isn't just for the nutrition fanatics.
While collagen is touted as a "beauty food" to help with hair growth and soothe fine lines, it is also linked to bone and digestive health.
Easy ways to incorporate this superfood? Put a tablespoon into your morning smoothie, or cup of coffee!
Buzzword of the year? Inflammation.
Inflammation fighter of the year? Turmeric.
The actual inflammation fighter in turmeric is curcumin. But to activate this, you need to mix it with cracked black pepper. While a golden turmeric milk latte is delicious, and a wonderful nightcap, if you're really looking for the medicinal effects, pop a curcumin supplement alongside a high fat meal (like salmon), with freshly cracked black pepper!
3. Maca Root
Despite it being called a root, this superfood is an adaptogen that comes in powdered form and is hailed for it's ability to help regulate female hormones and provide a little extra dose of energy (alongside a multitude of vitamins and minerals).
Because it has a bit more of a flavour, it's best to mask this one in a smoothie or flavoured coffee.
4. Fermented anything
ICYMI: Fermented foods are key for optimizing your digestive system. Whether you're running to the washroom a little too quickly or dealing with a little bit of backup, incorporating fermented foods that are rich in probiotics can help ease gastrointestinal distress.
Some ways to incorporate these foods are:
5. All things avocado
We're cool with holding out on buying a house, as long as we get our fix of this green goodness and all-time perfect healthy fat. Put it on toast, blend it up in a smoothie or just eat it straight out of its own container. There's really no wrong way to eat it–unless you're not eating it at all!
Bonus: if you're following a low-carb, or ketogenic diet, this is a great addition to help curb hunger throughout the day.
If you're new to the world of superfoods - START SMALL! Try out a whole foods diet first, rich with fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and quality meats.
