We're excited to announce that August's Group Fitness Instructor of the Month is Emily Green. Emily teaches Group Fitness classes at Downtown Express, Howe and Davie, and Yaletown Fitness World––and even sometimes covers classes at other locations in the downtown area, including the North Shore!
Emily loves fitness and being active. She's originally from Toronto, but was swept off her feet by the beautiful Vancouver lifestyle, and she's now been a Vancouverite for the past 2.5 years.
She completed a Recreation and a Business degree, which allowed her to work during the day for multiple companies and nonprofit organizations, but always found herself wanting to be on her feet and helping others. This is why she couldn't be happier working at Steve Nash Fitness Clubs since the Spring of 2015.
We asked Emily a few questions about her time teaching at #TeamSNFC.
WHAT ARE THE CLASSES YOU REGULARLY TEACH? WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE CLASS AND WHY?
When starting at Steve Nash I only instructed JumpSport. Now thanks to a club who runs regular workshops and goes the extra mile to help their staff members grow and learn I teach Pump&Jump, Tabata, Nash 360, Power Intervals, 3D Glutes and 3D Core. My favourite classes are ones with HIIT such as Tabata and Power Intervals. HIIT pushes your limits until you the last second of the timer or the final repetition is done and then you truly feel like you can conquer any obstacle in your way.
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE TABLE WHEN IT COMES TO INSPIRING YOUR CLASS MEMBERS?
I bring a high energy level and a high impact. Members do not finish class saying it was an easy workout. There are always modifications for everyone, but always challenges too. I become very engrossed into the workouts, which can help the members become pulled in and be in the right workout attitude, too. Workouts are a time to the leave stresses from the outside on the other side of the gym door.
Emily's classes have grown substantially since she first started with us and she now has a very strong following. She is always there to help her fellow instructors with coverage whenever she can––even at a moment's notice. It's been a pleasure watching her gain confidence, strength, and build relationships with members and peers. She is very deserving of the Instructor of the Month and we are lucky to have her as part of our team.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO FITNESS & TEACHING?
After I finished training in provincial gymnastics, I still wanted to stay fit and active. As well as being pushed to new challenges and having a connection with someone similar to a coach. I joined a small private club and as a newbie to group fitness I didn’t know what to expect. Fortunately because the instructors were so welcoming right from the first day I loved it. I had fun, felt hard worked after each class and fell in love with endorphins. I quickly decided afterwards having the ability to teach it to others would be amazing. The members put trust in me to lead and I am inspired to always give them what they came for. Now as a fitness instructor I am inspired by instructors like Andrew Alcalde and Dolores Leite who have taught me tons and I love attending their classes. Their energy and unique personal touch each is too good to miss.
HOW HAS GROUP FITNESS IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
It has helped me grow my own self- confidence by taking on leadership and making friends along the way. One never regrets going to the gym. Whenever I leave the gym I am smiling. It helps handle stress, keeps me active, and is something fun to do with others.
WHAT’S YOUR FONDEST MEMORY FROM TEACHING AT SNFC?
A certain memory was once when I was introducing the class to a new member and explaining what we would be doing. The member looked quite nervous. Then one of the weekly regular members beside her spoke out and reassured her how great this class was and she had come to the right one. It touched me that she was speaking from her positive past experiences and there again ready to rumble. Plus I always love the high fives after class.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE OUR MEMBERS ABOUT LEADING A HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLE?
Do your best to be persistent and consistent. Once you get into the routine of your active lifestyle it becomes a habit! Plus the motivation (if it’s a day I am not there cheering crazy at the front) can always be reminding yourself how good it felt the day before and if you’ve done it once you can do it again.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR MEMBERS WHO ARE NEW TO GROUP FITNESS?
Welcome! Jump on board! There is a room for everyone and everyone will have their own fitness preferences. It’s important to not put too much pressure on yourself. Small changes eventually add up to huge results.
