Group Fitness Instructor of the Month: Diane Batryn

The SNFC Group Fitness Team is excited to feature this month's Group Fitness Instructor of the Month, Diane Batryn, from Morgan Crossing!

Diane was a licensed architect living in Manila, Philippines, but moved to Vancouver in 2001. She currently works full-time in the construction industry as a Project Coordinator, and does interior design for residential bathrooms and kitchens on the side, as well as teaching Zumba, Tabata, Sports Intervals, Pump, and more at Morgan Crossing. Talk about a busy schedule!

We touched base with Diane to ask her a few questions about her experience teaching Group FItness:

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE GROUP FITNESS CLASS AND WHY?

I love teaching all formats and don’t really have a favourite in particular. Although, if I may say... my favourite class is when I know that the participants are getting the workout that they came for. When participants come to you after the class and tell you they had good workout, it’s so worth it to be an instructor.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE TABLE WHEN IT COMES TO INSPIRING YOUR CLASS MEMBERS?

As a Group Fitness Instructor, I know the planning, preparation, training, and discipline it takes to make a class magically motivating, so I am constantly learning for my own betterment as an instructor. I am prepared, and confident every time I come to class but most importantly, it’s always my goal to promote camaraderie and a sense of community within the class.

Diane has been a great asset to the Area 4 team. In one short year, she has taken on at least one class at all locations and she is open to teach all formats. Diane brings a lot of passion to her classes and is truly a great leader. Her members enjoy her classes very much.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO FITNESS & TEACHING?

Although, I am very dedicated to my full time job, fitness has always been my passion. I taught aerobics for a short time in my younger years. Then there was a long halt but I continued to go to the gym as a participant. My unending love for fitness and a healthy lifestyle has steered me to re-invent myself. We only live once. "We only regret the chances we did not take."

HOW HAS GROUP FITNESS IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?

It has been very powerful for me, not just for transforming the body but also in improving my general well-being. I have more energy than I ever had before and feels great. It gives me a sense of satisfaction that I can share it with others–it may help them change their lives, too.

WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY FROM TEACHING AT SNFC?

I subbed for a class once and quite a few participants came up to me after the class and gave good feedback. They told me that they would come to my class if I taught there regularly. It inspired me even more.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR MEMBERS WHO ARE NEW TO GROUP FITNESS?

We are all busy... but try to squeeze in bits of activity throughout the day. Start with small changes. Remember, anything is better than nothing! With that said, participating in group exercise class challenges you to work out beyond your perceived limitations. It’s the competitiveness in each of us. Try all of the classes and decide which one suits your needs.
