3 Le Barre Moves To Achieve A Dancer's Body

If you’re looking for an awesome group fitness class that tones, sculpts and lengthens the body, Le Barre is for you. Here are three of my favourite Le Barre moves that go above and beyond to achieve a long and lean dancer’s physique.

The Plié/Grand Plié


Mimicking a squat, but in a ‘turned out’ position of the legs. Stand with your heels touching each other, toes facing the corners of the room. Bend the legs to make a diamond shape, then slowly straighten back up. As you straighten up, focus on squeezing the glutes and lifting the quadriceps to contract the leg muscles.


3 sets of 10 repetitions, parallel or turned out.

Stand with you feet together, either parallel or turned out. Raise onto the balls of your feet as high as it is comfortable for you. Focus on lengthening the legs, squeezing the glutes and keeping the core active.

Port De Bras


The Port De Bras is the perfect exercise for toning your arms. Simply move your arms between all arm positions (1st to 5th) or practice holding a position for 15-30 seconds each, increasing the duration over time and focusing on lengthening the arms from the shoulder to the fingertips.


Hold each position (1 through 5) for 15-30 seconds. Repeat cycle 3-4 times through.

Bonus move: The Plank

Yep, it’s true. Planking is everywhere. It strengthens your core, making arm and leg movements much easier to perform.


Hold the plank position for 30 seconds – 1 minute at a time. Repeat for 3 sets.

For a challenge, hold a plank with 1 leg slightly off the ground, switching legs at the halfway mark.
